ROGERS MIDDLE SCHOOL
DECEMBER/JANUARY 2023 NEWSLETTER
FROM THE INTERIM PRINCIPAL
Dear Rogers Families,
December is a busy month....concerts, conferences, holidays, family and SNOW!
Parent-Teacher Conference Day is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 8, 2023. There will be no school for students. Our approach to conferences/communications at the middle school level is;
- Grade 4 teachers will schedule in-person conferences with parents/guardians on conference day or at a mutually agreed upon time.
- Grade 5 & 6 teachers will be communicating with parents/guardians about student progress through a variety of means, including in-person meetings, phone calls, written communication, etc. These will be based on student needs. Your child's teacher will reach out to you if a conference is necessary at this time.
DRESS YOUR STUDENT WARMLY
Construction has begun on our gym floor which was damaged during the late August rains and subsequent flooding. The project is expected to take two months. Since space is limited in our school and we don't have unused large indoor spaces as a back-up, our staff will make every effort to take students outside for Physical Education and recess. We follow the recess guidelines that are currently in place in our district elementary schools – all children go outside when the temperature is above 20-25 degrees. Clearly there will be exceptions to this guideline, but for the most part, our goal is to get students outside to play, exercise and get fresh air at every opportunity – again, weather permitting.
Please help to make sure your child comes prepared to go outside for PE and recess for the next 7-10 weeks while the gym is closed. Unfortunately, we do not have provisions or staffing for students to stay inside as an option to recess or PE.
LABEL CLOTHING
Label your child’s hoodies, coats, jackets, snow pants, boots, etc., even if it’s just their initials on a tag, so items left behind can be returned.
GRADE 4 DISMISSAL
Fourth-grade students are now dismissed through the main Rogers/Southlawn front entrance. This is Door #1. Please note this change when picking-up your fourth grader. This new procedure is due to construction and to help fourth-grade students stay away from the construction zone as an added safety measure.
I am sure parents/guardians wonder about security with contractors inside our school. This project was awarded locally and is overseen by Campus Construction Management, a company that has worked with West Irondequoit schools for many years during large-scale projects. All contractors have been vetted before starting work. They have photo ID badges and are expected to adhere to the rules of our school, including, but not limited to, not smoking whatsoever while on school property.
I would like to wish all of the Roges families a wonderful holiday season, however you might celebrate. For me, this is a time to reflect how blessed I am with family, friends and the gift of working as Rogers interim principal these past five months. Our school is a real treasure!
Most sincerely,
Peter J. Hens
Interim Principal

RTI: Informed decisions to support students
Educational interventions are targeted strategies or actions implemented to support and enhance a child's learning and development. Response to Intervention (RTI) is a multi-tiered framework used to identify and support students who may be struggling academically or behaviorally. It involves a systematic approach of providing interventions at increasing levels of intensity based on a student's response to instruction and support. The goal of RTI is to prevent academic difficulties, identify and address learning or behavioral challenges early on, and provide targeted interventions to help students succeed. Crossing Guard Update
IPD TO ALTER GUARD STRUCTURE IN WINTER
We wanted to remind you again of an upcoming change by IPD to the Crossing Guard schedule in early 2024 that will impact some families. The Irondequoit Police Dept. has informed us that it will eliminate crossing guards at the following locations from Tuesday, Jan. 2 through Friday, Feb. 16 because of a "low-to-no student count," during that time frame.
St. Paul @ Pattonwood
Lakeshore @ Washington
St. Paul @ Westbourne
Portland @ Coronado
“It is both safer and more practical to have those crossing guards redeployed to other posts where there is a need to cross students," IPD shared with us, adding that shifting those guards to higher traffic areas during that seven-week span, such as in front of Dake Jr. HS and IHS, will enhance student safety.
If you have questions, please email IPD Crossing Guard Coordinator, Mary Beth Egeling, at megeling@irondequoit.gov. If you or anyone you know would want to be a crossing guard, please also email her to obtain more information.

PLEASE CHECK/UPDATE EMERGENCY CONTACT INFO
Do you:
- Have a new cell phone number or switch carriers recently?
- Have a new email address or new work phone number?
- Need to update your emergency contacts?
Be sure to keep us informed of any changes to your numbers or emergency contact information. Update it directly on the Infinite Campus Portal, or send in a note with your child.

WHY YOUR MOBILE NUMBER IS CRITICAL
You must have your mobile number in the MOBILE NUMBER field. Our system does NOT default even if you have just one field filled out (Home/Work/Mobile). If your mobile number is not in the correct field, you will NOT receive text messages from our school/district for emergencies (such as school closings in winter months).
